America's Second Harvest Urges Senate to Include $100 Million for ...

At the same time, demand has increased.

To meet this demand quickly, America's Second Harvest recommends authorizing the Secretary of Agriculture to streamline the procurement process. And, as is done in the ongoing TEFAP program, a small percentage of funds should be made available to defray state and local costs associated with distribution and handling.

"The increase in demand for emergency food due to the economic downturn has only made our supply situation worse," said Escarra. "And, given current economic forecasts, demand for emergency food is likely to increase in the coming months." Data released in November 2007 by the United States Department of Agriculture in its annual study of hunger in America indicated that the number of people living at the margins of hunger has increased from 35.1 to more than 35.5 million, including 12.6 million children.

Two Australian kayakers conquer Tasman

EXHAUSTED and at the point of collapse, they stumbled to shore arm-in-arm and immediately announced plans for their next adventure.

Sydney athletes James Castrission, 25, and Justin Jones, 24, yesterday made history after becoming the first two people to kayak across the Tasman, in what is believed to be the longest two-man kayaking expedition.

Their path saw them paddle about 3300km, far further than the 2000km they anticipated when they set out, and took 62 days - 20 days longer than scheduled.

Almost unable to walk after their leg muscles atrophied in the hull of the kayak, the pair paddled to Ngamotu beach inside Port Taranaki at 12.20pm and were greeted by a crowd of up to 10,000 people.

After a welcoming haka, a chorus of Waltzing Matilda and cheers of "Go Aussie", the pair were finally reunited with family.

Welcome to the fabulous consumer electronics show

Best Buy Inc.'s chief executive says he is "very nervous" about being able to supply customers with the millions of digital TV converter boxes needed ahead of the shutdown of most analog TV transmissions in 13 months.

"I think it's one of the biggest risks our industry has," vice chairman and CEO Brad Anderson told an industry audience at the CES.

Full-power television stations will turn off their analog signal on Feb. 17, 2009, after which they will broadcast in digital only.

Viewers who receive their signals through an antenna instead of cable or satellite and don't have a digital-ready TV will have to buy a converter.

Apart from the supply issue, customer education looms as a problem for the retailers. Speaking on the same panel, Phil Schoonover, the CEO of Circuit City Stores Inc.

Go Green: Cleaning up Texas beaches

Twice a year, thousands of Texans flock to the state's coastlines. But they're not motivated by surfing or soaking up the sun, they come to clean! Broken bottles, oil containers, even a rusted out car… some of what you may see walking our shorelines. Texas General Land Office (GLO) Commissioner Jerry Patterson says, "We have counterclockwise and clockwise currents in the Gulf of Mexico that converge on the Texas gulf coast, so a lot of the trash that is on the beach is not dropped there by careless Texans or careless tourists." Regardless of how it got there, it's a job Texans must do to keep the beaches looking like the treasure they are. This February 15th the GLO will have three winter Texan clean-ups that are going to be on South Padre, Corpus Christi and Aransas Pass. Every year thousands of Central Texans plan road trips and vacations to care for the beaches.

Sand, surf, and everything comes undone in Hong San-soo's Woman on the ...

Master of the beautifully modulated and devastatingly melancholy romantic farce, Korean director Hong Sang-soo has been a New York Film Festival fixture for most of the 21st century. Back in the day, he'd have been a familiar art-house presence as well, but Woman on the Beach is only his second movie to receive a theatrical run.

Hong is nothing if not an auteur. There's a sense that the 47-year-old, American-educated filmmaker has been repeating himself since his first Korean hit, the wistful, dryly comic Turning Gate (2002). But then compulsive repetition is one of his major themes. In Turning Gate, a romantically maladroit out-of-work actor embarked on successive failed relationships with two self-possessed women; its follow-up, Woman Is the Future of Man (2005), somewhat inverted the triangle to have a pair of thirtysomething urban intellectuals searching for the woman each loved and lost; the self-reflexive Tale of Cinema (2006) offered a case study in male idiocy, focusing on a former film student who believes that his hapless love life has been appropriated as material by a more successful classmate.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Soulja Boy Disses GZA, Jay, Ye? Lil' Scrappy's New ...

Hip-Hop hasn't been too kind to Lil' Scrappy in the last couple of years. Well, that's got nothing to do with the ladies. I thought Scrappy Doo and Diamond were rock solid, but it would appear that they aren't! Now, we know appearances can be deceiving, but let me explain. AllHipHop.com just got a new columnist, a an actress who is talking about being a fledgling actress. Her name is Noree Victoria. She is very pretty too. Here is her cute pic.

So, from what I understand (and am late on) is that Scrappy's Baby Momma got into a fight with Diamond. After that, Scrappy ended it with Diamond, who used to rap with Crime Mob. Now, you can't write/read a rumor about the girl and not read her column.
