Hansen: Experts split on effects Drake's wins bring off court

Holsker, a psychology major from Belvidere, Ill., was so sure Monday, she kept checking online to find out how high the men's team had climbed in the national rankings. (They're 16th, up from 22nd last week.)

Hoping to get good seats for the game against the University of Northern Iowa on Saturday, Holsker and her friends arrived at the Knapp Center almost two hours before tipoff. Twenty students were already in line.

With 17 straight victories following all those disappointing seasons, everything changes. The nearest empty parking space is suddenly located in Windsor Heights. The gatekeepers are turning people away.

It's safe to say that, after this season, Drake fans have seen the last of those tickets-hot dogs-everything-for-a-dollar specials.

While Holsker was hitting the refresh button Monday, Katie Wilz was trying to keep up with the lines at the University Book Store.

SURFING - Evans triumphs at Whangamata

TOP Hawke's Bay surfer Jeremy Evans had no intention of entering Monday's Billabong Pro event at Whangamata.

"Mum and Dad and my girlfriend Kate sort of encouraged me to enter. They were giving me grief about not entering last week's nationals in Gisborne, too ... so I went up to Whangamata to make peace with the family," said Evans.

The Te Awanga builder more than "made peace" and finished third equal with Gisborne's Bobby Hansen after being knocked out in the semi-finals by Gisborne's eventual winner Maz Quinn.

"I was rapt because I hadn't entered a national event for a while and it matched my previous best placing from a few years ago," said Evans, 27, who has been surfing for the past 16 years.

Technology possibilities for the next decade

How will technology change the way we shop, learn and entertain ourselves? How will it change the way we get news, protect our privacy, connect with friends? We look ahead 10 years, and imagine a whole different world.

Let's get this out of the way first - in the next 10 years, no one will travel to work by jet pack or have robot maids that serve dinner. But technology will continue to transform the rituals of everyday life - sometimes in startling ways.

Imagine televisions that project 3-D images into the middle of the living room, for a theater-in-the-round experience. And while we won't get those robot maids, our appliances might start "talking" to us through e-mail alerts, letting us know when a part is getting worn down and needs to be replaced.

Many other changes will be more subtle, as technology finds new ways into our daily routine.

Dream ride to Cape, but a nightmare driving home

For thousands of visitors, going to Cape Cod over Memorial Day weekend was much easier and more pleasant than heading home. The new $60 million flyover, which erased the hated rotary at the base of the Sagamore Bridge, smoothed Cape-bound travel on Friday and Saturday. But drivers returning from the Cape Monday found themselves in a worse-than-usual traffic nightmare, with backups that stretched as far as 17 miles to Yarmouth at midafternoon.

To avoid a repeat this summer, state transportation officials said yesterday they plan to install electronic signs urging vacationers to stagger their departure from the Cape as well as their arrival. Officials said they will also look at possible changes to the roadways around Exit 1, where Route 6A merges into Route 6 at the base of the bridge.

SMG and Freddie Hit the Waves Surfing

Sarah Michelle Gellar Prinze and Freddie must have gotten the memo that Hawaii is the place to be — the couple was spotted hitting the waves on New Year's Eve. Methinks they may have kissed their way into the new year despite some bumps and bruises from a day trying to surf. Hey, at least they both got up on the boards; nice job guys! While it looks like SMG could have left the non-waterproof mascara at home, at least she was in the right gear to keep herself from any embarrassing slip ups. How cute is Freddie laughing at her?
