| Where The Z-Boys Began: Horizons/Zephyr
The one-story stucco building at Main and Bay streets can hardly be said to have any architectural significance. Yet it has been under discussion for possible designation by the Santa Monica Landmarks Commission. The building is the home of the Horizons West surf shop and also houses the Zephyr skateboard shop, home to the legendary Z-Boys skate team who have been the subject of two films, the documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys and the fiction film, Lords of Dogtown. Randy Wright has managed Horizons since the mid-1980s, and knows a great deal about the local surf and skate scene. Back in 1984 I was surfing in Venice and I was a really advanced local surfer, says Wright. This surf shop had a pretty well-known surf scene at the time. They picked me up [and] I surfed for the shop [as part of the team representing the shop in competitions] and I started working here.
Scenic drive: Yuma to Quartzsite
Some people think of western Arizona as a wasteland. But desert rats treasure its scrubby plants, ragged mountains and, to steal a phrase from Buzz Aldrin, its magnificent desolation. The drive along U.S. 95 contains a wealth of quirky sights and natural wonders: outlandish landscapes, a gift shop in the middle of nowhere, an isolated oasis of rare palm trees and a sprawling RV community that in winter becomes one of Arizona's largest cities. Things to note along the way: Castle Dome Mountains: If you've been to southwestern Arizona, chances are good you've seen Castle Dome Peak. The castlelike silhouette, high on the mountains' ridgeline, is visible for miles and one of the region's most recognizable landmarks. You'll see the peak for much of the drive north on U.S. 95, with especially good views between mile markers 60 and 62.
Pilot restrained after 'talking to God' on flight to Heathrow
Although the illness of flight crew is rare, pilots are fully trained for such an event," said Captain Andy Wilson, president of ACPA. "The safe diversion was the result of the pilot following standard operating procedures in the professional manner that is expected of Air Canada pilots." Transport Canada, the national body in charge of aviation safety, has opened an investigation and will interview the flight crew. Canadian pilots must undergo a medical check every six months as a condition of their licence. In 1999 a New York-bound EgyptAir flight crashed into the Atlantic shortly after the co-pilot, who was controlling the plane, was heard to say "I put my faith in God" as the autopilot was switched off. The plane then plunged into a steep dive and crashed into the sea, killing 217 people.

If you missed a few along the way, don't worry. We've got you covered with our list of the 10 Best New Restaurants of 2007. We looked back over the year to find the fresh new faces we think you'll be hearing more about -- the ones to try if you haven't already. Bon appetit! 1.
