| SURFING - Evans triumphs at Whangamata
TOP Hawke's Bay surfer Jeremy Evans had no intention of entering Monday's Billabong Pro event at Whangamata. "Mum and Dad and my girlfriend Kate sort of encouraged me to enter. They were giving me grief about not entering last week's nationals in Gisborne, too ... so I went up to Whangamata to make peace with the family," said Evans. The Te Awanga builder more than "made peace" and finished third equal with Gisborne's Bobby Hansen after being knocked out in the semi-finals by Gisborne's eventual winner Maz Quinn. "I was rapt because I hadn't entered a national event for a while and it matched my previous best placing from a few years ago," said Evans, 27, who has been surfing for the past 16 years. .
Teen shark attack victim releases new documentary
Bethany Hamilton, the young teenage girl who made headlines for swiftly resuming her amateur surfing career after losing an arm in a 2003 shark attack in the waters off Hawaii, shares her story to hundreds of teens. The Christian teen was just 13 years old when the 14-foot tiger shark attacked her just over three years ago on the North Shore of Kauai. The shark also took a 16-inch bite out of her surfboard. Bethany new documentary, "Heart of a Soul Surfer," which is being released by Walking on Water, a Christian surf company based in San Diego, chronicles how Bethany refused to walk away from the ocean sport, despite the amputation of her left arm. Retired country cop posing as girl nabs online predators
DIAMOND, Mo. — No one will ever confuse Jim Murray with a teenager. His tall frame, broad shoulders and clipped gray hair give him away for the grandfather he is. But for a 69-year-old retired small-town police chief, Murray cuts a credible figure as a 13-year-old girl surfing the Web, looking for friends. He knows all the instant-messaging shorthand, the emoticons, the places to find men looking for sex with children. Murray's retirement job from a rural home office has netted 20 arrests since he started in 2002, but his latest catch was the first elected official: four felony enticement charges against a small-town Missouri mayor, who after his arrest called Murray up and begged him to make the case go away. Nineteen other defendants have included a Missouri furniture company executive, an Arkansas professor and a Tulsa, Okla., school security guard.
Girl Scout awarded medal for saving life
At just 11-years-old, a North Texas girl is being honored with one of the hardest awards to get, the Girl Scout's Medal of Honor. What she learned in Girl Scouts is being credited for helping her during a serious family emergency. "On my honor, I will try to help people at all times," is the pledge Girl Scouts make. Peyton Nairon followed through with that pledge while boogie boarding on a family vacation. "I saw something floating in the water and then realized it was him," she said. "Him" was her father, who was drowning after hitting the ocean's bottom. "I remember rolling around in the surf totally paralyzed," said Baxter Nairon, Peyton's father. Peyton stepped in and dragged her 6'3, 250 pound father to shore at Laguna Beach.

Wind and waves, a poet laureate, and tough policing
As we enter the new year, some issues remain doggedly at the island's heels just as they were a year ago: the Champlin's affair, state budget constraints and high energy costs. But we also had some unexpected and welcomed turns: a potential solution to those energy problems, a state poet laureate selected from our ranks, and a busy summer held in check by competent police work. Some of the most exciting announcements — with the potential to change life on the island — occurred in the last few weeks of 2007.Wind and waves to the rescueAfter Governor Donald Carcieri announced his goal to provide a minimum of 15 percent of the state's electricity from renewable sources, wind energy ended being high on that list. The state commissioned a study, and Rhode Island Commissioner of Energy Resources Andrew Dzykewicz announced in a series of on-island presentations that two of the prime locations for a wind farm are off the shores of Block Island. If approved, said Dzykewicz, there could be as many as 100 wind turbines, standing 450 feet high with blades extended, complete with foghorns and lights, anywhere from a mile to three miles south of the island.
