STUDIO TOURS: PIA GUERRA

Water cooler is there for cold water on hot days and hot tea on cold nights. You can see the honey and tea bags further along the wall there.

The Gameboy DS is always loaded up with Tetris and for the last few years Ive played a round before starting to draw, it seems to settle my brain. Im guessing the focus on spatial relations puts me into a hard right brain mode, shoos out the squirrels.

Being treated like a dog isn't bad at all at upscale lodgings

ON AN overnight trip to visit family and friends in San Jose last month, Andrew and Laura Murray of Sacramento packed up the entire clan.

There was Violet, their 2-year-old daughter. And Merry and Emile, their two Pomeranian dogs. And Gustavia, their calico cat.

You think the Murrays had problems finding a hotel willing to accept their mobile Animal Planet?

Not at all. The Cypress Hotel in Cupertino welcomed them with open paws.

"We encourage it," said Aaron Menchada, the hotel's assistant general manager who oversees its pet program. "We want guests that have pets as part of their family to bring them. We want to take care of them."

Pet-friendly hotels have been popular for several years, and the trend is showing no signs of abating. The Web site Pettravel.com has a database of more than 150 countries and 35,000 hotels and other accommodations that accept Fido and Fluffy.

BUZZY TRENT: RIP

Buzzy Trent, a fearless North Shore waterman, passed away in his sleep on September 27th at age 77. Trent, who is most noteworthy for charging mammoth sized Makaha, appears to have died of natural causes.

Trent was born in San Diego in 1929 but raised in Santa Monica where he began bodysurfing at age 12. He also delivered newspapers along Highway 101. On his route, he witnessed lifeguard Chuck King surfing, and the next day, he procured a solid redwood board. He hitched the 127-pound plank to a wagon behind his bike and pedaled to Malibu, where his love for surfing began.

After unofficially winning a yacht race on a catamaran, Trent settled in Hawaii. He soon began riding the biggest waves he could find, choosing Makaha and Waimea as his ultimate arenas. His trademark was to sit furthest out at Makaha and stroke into some serious bombs, serious enough to snap his leg like a twig on one unfortunate occasion.
