Images: Storm Churns Up Massive Waves

The storm system that brought rain and snow across Southern California also churned up the surf south of the border. One of the surfers captured video while surfing 12 miles off the coast of Ensenada, Mexico.

The photographer and his friends launched their jet skis at 5 a.m. and said they used GPS to find their way in the dark.

Some of the monstrous waves they encountered were reported to be 40 feet tall.

The waves were so massive that Mexican officials shut down harbors in the area. .

Go Green: Cleaning up Texas beaches

Twice a year, thousands of Texans flock to the state's coastlines. But they're not motivated by surfing or soaking up the sun, they come to clean! Broken bottles, oil containers, even a rusted out car… some of what you may see walking our shorelines. Texas General Land Office (GLO) Commissioner Jerry Patterson says, "We have counterclockwise and clockwise currents in the Gulf of Mexico that converge on the Texas gulf coast, so a lot of the trash that is on the beach is not dropped there by careless Texans or careless tourists." Regardless of how it got there, it's a job Texans must do to keep the beaches looking like the treasure they are. This February 15th the GLO will have three winter Texan clean-ups that are going to be on South Padre, Corpus Christi and Aransas Pass. Every year thousands of Central Texans plan road trips and vacations to care for the beaches.

Al Gore, Sienna Miller, Happy Feet Green with Honors

Al Gore may be the most esteemed also-ran of all time.

The newly minted Nobel Peace Prize winner and upcoming 30 Rock guest star had to make room on the mantelpiece Wednesday for yet another honor for his work on climate-change awareness, this time an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Environmental Media Association, which he shared with Live Earth producer Kevin Wall.

All proceeds from Live Earth: The Concerts for a Climate in Crisis, the 24-hour, seven-continent spinfest that played host to some of music's heaviest hitters in July, went to Gore's nonprofit Alliance for Climate Protection and like-minded U.S. and international organizations.

Happy Feet, in which cuddly dancing-and-singing penguins mixed it up with greedy corporate fisheries and marine-life theme parks, was named Best Feature Film for its ecologically uplifting and informative message, while the episode "Wear," part of Sundance Channel's Big Ideas for a Small Planet series, took Best Documentary honors.

First Edition Cycling News

In only her third ever World Cup race, American Katie Compton (Spike Shooter) took her first victory on the cyclo-cross World Cup circuit. The 29 year-old totally dominated the women's race in Pinjacker, Netherlands, where local Dutch riders had hoped to continue their domination from previous rounds.

Thirty-four women started the second World Cup race of the season, and the big favourite was newly crowned European champion Daphny Van Den Brand (ZZPR.nl) who had won the previous World Cup race in Kalmthout. Compton decided things would be different this time and dropped everybody including Van Den Brand on the first lap.

A chasing group gathered behind the American including Belgian Sanne Cant (ASD Selle Italia Guerciotti) who had a good start, but the 17 year-old couldn't maintain her tempo and eventually finished eighth.

UH Warriors land three JC recruits

The Hawai'i football team yesterday took three major steps in filling pressing needs, receiving verbal commitments from a wideout and two cornerbacks.

The Warriors landed:

Mike Tinoco, a wide receiver from Saddleback Community College in Mission Viejo, Calif.

Chris Black, a cornerback from College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, Calif.

Jeramy Bryant, a cornerback from Los Angeles Harbor College.

All three have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

The Warriors had lost all four starting receivers from the Western Athletic Conference's 2007 Unit of the Year. Wideouts Jason Rivers and C.J. Hawthorne completed their NCAA eligibility, and slotbacks Davone Bess and Ryan Grice-Mullins opted to apply for the 2008 National Football League draft.

Griffin's quick return, UConn's shorthanded effort highlight week

The Aggies have new life after beating Oklahoma State on the road.

- Memphis at Houston, Wednesday: The Tigers have a few hurdles to get over before going undefeated. This is one of them.

- Indiana at Wisconsin, Thursday (ESPN, 9 p.m. ET): Both teams lost last Saturday, taking a bit of the steam out of this one. But the Hoosiers lost out of conference so a win here would certainly give them an edge in the race for the title.

- Arizona at USC, Thursday: This is a matchup between two of the surging teams in the country. Don't be surprised to see either one of these squads during the second weekend in of the tournament.

- Dayton at Rhode Island, Saturday: This could be a classic A-10-type bubble game if there isn't room for both in the Dance.
